Adorable Sleeping Bag Craft for Kids: Great for Summer

The summer months are the perfect time to relax and enjoy time outside. We go camping from time to time and while we don’t lay in our sleeping bags under the stars, I’d like to think some day we will. It seems like such a peaceful experience – laying in the dark with only the stars for light, listening to the insects, frogs and animals making their nighttime noises. When we aren’t able to go camping, we do this Sleeping Bag Craft instead!

How Can I Use This In The Classroom?

The sleeping bag craft has many uses all year long. Think about all the times kids like to use their sleeping bags. I remember using them all the time for sleepovers, snuggling up for a good movie and of course camping. You can use the sleeping bag craft with your kids for many occasions including

  • End of Year Camping Celebration: Many teachers end the year with themed days or weeks. If you do a camping day or a camping week, kids can complete this craft during that time to celebrate a fantastic school year.
  • Classroom Reward: If you have a group of kids that love to do crafts, you can incentivize great behavior with this craft as a reward.
  • Snuggling Up For a Good Year: Use this craft at the beginning of the year to welcome new students and staff. Kids can complete the craft or you can use elements of it to make a nice, show-stopping bulletin board.
  • Camping Theme: For classrooms or libraries with a camping theme, use these sleeping bag crafts to decorate your space.

How To Prep This Craft

If you’re like me, you like to prep all of your materials for the week (sometimes the month) well in advance. This craft is simple, so don’t stress. The craft comes with step by step instructions to walk you through how to assemble the craft with your kids, as well as gather your materials before kids are involved.

There are two ways to prep this craft. You can print the templates onto colored cardstock or construction paper for students to cut out themselves or you can print out the labeled templates for the kids to trace, cut, and glue. Some people like to print the labeled templates onto plain cardstock and keep them in their files. Then, they trace those templates year after year. You choose what works best for your prepping style!

Assembling The Sleeping Bag Craft

To assemble this Sleeping Bag Craft, you’ll just need to decide if you want the craft to be a boy or a girl.

First, glue the pillow onto the top of the sleeping bag.

Next, glue the head onto the pillow. If it’s a girl, tuck the ponytail just under the head. Then glue the hair and eyes onto the head. For a silly twist, use googly eyes instead of the eye templates. Use a black marker to draw a smile.

Then, glue the two pieces of the sleeping bag together, with one overlapping the other just a tiny bit. Glue them to the pillow.

To finish, glue down the moon and stars. Add the child’s hands to the top of the sleeping bag so it looks like they are peeking out of the bag.
