Simple Hatchin’ Chick Craftivity for Spring

When I was younger, my dad would take me to the Tractor Supply stores in our area to get dog food. For some reason, it was the cheapest place to find food and it worked for us because it meant a trip to a mini petting zoo! We got to see, pet and hold little baby chicks and ducks. This Hatchin’ Chick Craftivity always reminds me of happy springtimes with my family and friends. I want to pass on that happiness to other parents and teachers!

Life Cycle of a Chick

Spring is a great time to discuss the life cycle of a chick. I know lots of teachers and parents that have gotten their hands on incubators and eggs to watch this magical process. It’s so cool to check in on the little eggs and newborn babies each day!

This Hatchin’ Chick Craftivity is a fantastic addition to your lessons about the life cycle of a chick. When learning about chicks, my kiddos like to use the following writing prompts to wrap up our unit.

  • Chicks are…
  • 4 Facts about Chicks…

Students can use their knowledge about chicks to finish the sentence starters and create a fun writing piece to attach to their craft. They reflect on what we have learned and add it to their writing. If we have time, we do individual research time to learn even more about chicks and add what we find to our writing pieces.

Chicks at Easter

When celebrating Easter, I really enjoy doing as many crafts as I possibly can to decorate my home or classroom. The kids enjoy creating this little chick and then attaching one of the following writing prompts to their little yellow chick.

  • This Easter I will…
  • I like Easter because…

The Hatichin’ Chick Craftivity is super easy to cut out and glue together to make a bright display for the hallway! I like to read a fun story to go along with the activity too. One of our favorites is The Easter Chick by Geraldine Elschner. The kids love the silly story and the cute crafts we do together. It’s perfect for all ages, especially those still working on their fine motor skills.

Fun Chick Ideas

One of the best ways, in my opinion, to do a writing craft is to let the children use their imaginations. We brainstorm ideas for the following prompts and then get to writing our unique pieces.

  • If I were a chick…
  • My Baby Chick Story

The kids think it is so funny to write about what they would do if they were a baby chick. Their responses are so inventive and they always think of things that never crossed my mind. They always write about pecking or trying to fly. Oh to be a child again!

These are great prompts to use in preschool and kindergarten because you can ask the child how to finish the sentence or to make up their own story. You can then write their words for them if they can’t write them on their own. They’re always so proud to share their stories with parents or teachers when they see them hanging up.

This little Hatchin’ Chick is part of my Easter Crafts Bundle, which includes several variations of an Easter bunny, an Easter egg, a sheep, an Easter basket, Peeps and flowers. They are all brightly colored, simple and very fun to complete with your little ones. I hope you enjoy all of the Easter crafts this spring.
